A Family Council is a collective of family members and friends of residents in long-term care homes (LTC). These councils come together to provide peer support, enhance education, and enhance the overall experiences of everyone in long-term care.
Since the 1990s, family members and friends of LTC residents have united to support each other as caregivers, advocate for improvements in their loved ones’ LTC facilities, stay informed about resident-related issues, and drive positive changes within the long-term care system. These grassroots efforts laid the groundwork for the organized and impactful Family Councils we see today!
What began as a local movement to engage families in long-term care evolved into a structured pilot initiative, leading to the establishment of numerous Family Councils across Ontario. These councils operate under legislative authority and receive support from Family Councils Ontario. Their mission: to empower families and enhance the LTC experience for all.
