Maxville Manor Community Report 2023

Message from Amy Porteous, Chief Executive Officer

I would like to start off by saying I am deeply impressed by the unwavering commitment of the entire Maxville Manor community—including managers, employees, volunteers, donors, and families—to enhancing the lives of those we serve. Our continued success is the result of numerous actions, both significant and minor, undertaken by our dedicated staff, volunteers, and donors. Each day at Maxville Manor, we witness the profound impact of individual efforts. Despite the challenges of a busy 2023, we collectively accomplished a great deal. I am proud to report that we successfully achieved 74% (28 out of 38) of our priority projects for 2023, even while navigating five Covid-19 outbreaks. The remaining 26% (10 out of 38) of our priorities were completed by the first quarter of 2024. I am eager to see what we can achieve in the last few months of the year. I am sure it will be nothing short of amazing.

2023; A Year In Review

As we look back on the whirlwind that was 2023, we are filled with immense pride and gratitude for what we achieved together, and our collective efforts propelled us forward. Here’s a summary of our accomplishments:

Introduced new technologies to residents including the Obie.

Improved all quality indicators including reduction in falls, reduction in restraints usage and reduction in use of antipsychotics without a diagnosis.

Successfully went through its 1st proactive ministry inspection.

Conducted resident and staff satisfaction surveys and implemented action plans to address any issues.

Implemented a new Day Program for ‘well’ seniors every 2nd Thursday along with a regular grocery run with the bus.

Developed an overarching Quality Committee.

Negotiated Bill 124 settlement with unionized staff.

Implemented Phase 2 of the LTC Act.

Recruited six international nurses to come to work at Maxville Manor as PSWs.

Were the recipients of a grant to support seniors with improving their technology skills in the community.

Completed a variety of improvements to the facility including changes to the resident TV system, adding water filtration system across the Manor, fixing the skylight, repainting the BC unit and patching the roof in C and E wings to address minor leakages.

How 2024 Is Going

This year, we introduced life stations to the Special Care Unit. The life station team identified four areas for residents in the BC unit: a laundry station, an infant care station, a hat station, and a Library Station. Additionally, we are in the process of creating rummage boxes and displays for the gentlemen. These initiatives aim to benefit the residents while also serving as engaging tools for the staff, designed to be interactive and evoke memories.

In mid-2024, we initiated our TOGETHER fundraising campaign. The redevelopment project is anticipated to span 40 months, expanding the Manor's capacity from 122 beds to 160 beds. Currently, we are finalizing the design development and plan to commence construction in Spring 2025.

We brought together 12 preceptors from the Manor staff marking a milestone as the inaugural institution in the SD&G region to offer this educational opportunity in partnership with the Rekai Center.  Participants explored cutting-edge teaching approaches, shared valuable perspectives, and enhanced their preceptorship abilities. These preceptors welcome new staff to the organization through orientation and a formal buddy program.

Seniors Outreach Services - Providing Virtual Programming To The Community

In May 2022, Maxville Manor Outreach Services announced that they were the recipient of Community Services Recovery funding in the amount of $82,070. This grant was aimed to reduce social isolation and loneliness experienced by many individuals because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, 30 clients received new IPAD devices.  Participants were divided into groups based on experience and provided with hands-on instruction of how to navigate the iPad device and various applications.  36 participants engaged in several educational training sessions using both in-person and virtual sessions.  It soon became evident that these programs improved one’s confidence, skill level and interest in technology.  With the purchase of a smartboard, owl, visual and hearing devices, programs became more interactive.  Virtual events included Chair Yoga, Paint Night, Trivia, Mental Aerobics, a Music workshop and an informative presentation by the Maxville Manor Dietitian.

On May 30, 2023, we celebrated the success of the program with a Tea & Tech Event at the Maxville Complex.  The group enjoyed coffee, tea and delicious treats from Maxville Manor. Participants joined in various iPad challenges that were both fun and educational.

The Community Development Project has been very successful and is much enjoyed by our community seniors.  Virtual Programs continue once a week until the end of 2024.  Upcoming online programs include Exercise and Falls Prevention, Chair Dancing, and a Murder Mystery Game! Special thanks to the Seniors Outreach Team for the success of this project

Planning For 2025

As we look forward, there are many exciting things on the horizon for Maxville Manor. The major thing is the start of the redevelopment project, where construction is planned for Spring 2025. However, there are other exciting projects planned for 2025 that will define the future of the Manor. Mainly we will be doing a Strategic Planning exercise that will chart the course of the next 4 years and everyone will be engaged in this process. Put your thinking caps on about unmet needs in the area and how Maxville Manor can be part of the solution.

Thank you for your support and dedication over 2023 and 2024 and we look forward to what the future brings for Maxville Manor together.

TOGETHER We redevelop!
